Anyone with reloading exper. with the 454 Casull?

I havent got a warm fuzzy from my reloading manuals. Tell me your best loads, what bullet diam., 451 or 452 and which is more accurate, which bullet manuf. are you using, powder, preference of brass manuf. What do you think of Starline brass, are the case walls as good as Winchester's? How many loadings are you getting from your brass? Has anyone experienced any throat erosion problems? Thanks, Rob.

    300 grain .451 Speer Flat point33 grains of H110CCI Small rifle magnum primerEither brass mentioned is good.The .451 is the better diameter. Go ahead and ream the cylinders to .452, you'll be amazed.Put in a bowl mix, well, seat, crimp, load and HOLD ON TIGHT!

    What would reaming the cylinders be good for, never heard of that one. Are the cylinders too tight for the .452, I thought it was designed for .452?

    I don't know which 454 gun you're loading for, my experience with it is limited to my FA guns (6 and 7.5 inch barrels). I'm using Oregon Trails 300 gr. bullets; they are .452 which is what the FA guns are supposed to shoot. I use small rifle magnum primers (CCI 450's), Winchester or Starline brass. I haven't had any problems with the brass, and I'm sure some of them have been loaded more than 10 times. The best load I've found so far is 28.5 gr. of H110. Oregon Trails has some loading data (not published yet) that I tried using AA5744 - in my guns it produced miserable groups. Other powders I've tried are W231 (variable results), 2400 and Unique.OAL in my pistols is critical, I've settled on 1.654 as working really well. I've been tinkering with these guns for the past year, shooting them indoors in the winter (it's a good way to get the range to yourself) and outdoors in the summer. This year I've run 600-700 rounds thru these guns, trying to find a load that worked for me. There is some good load info available on the Freedom Arms site (click on "Loading Data") http://www.freedomarms.com/freedomarms.html I haven't had any throat erosion problems. Another bullet I like in this gun is the Hornady XTP in 250 grs. - but I ran out of them before I could find something that worked well enough to talk about.

    F-A brass small rifle primer LBT 335 gr cast 24gr-H110 This clocks 1291 from my 6" F-A and will break both shoulders on a seven and one half foot black bear.

    I reamed the cylinders on my Ruger to .452 and shot .451 and got good groups. I came across the idea from a friend of mine with the same gun. He did it and got good results so I followed suit......same results. Seems that the loose tolerances work for that particular firearm for some reason. Hold on tight!Chris

    Chris, You stated that YOU reamed your cylinders, if you did it yourself, please email me with the process of how you did it, I'd really like to know how you did it, I have my own ideas on it, but would like to listen to the voice of experience prior to tackling it myself, thanks Rob. robsguns@yahoo.com

    Cannot confirm that cylinder was honed out. I still get readings of .451. Odd thing isthe cylinder bore has a step about .45" fromthe front with the rear part of the cylindermeasureing .475 which is good since that is also the diamater of the box of unfired .45 LC I Have.Saxon Pig: Since I have 50 of the reloads I have considered pulling the bullets & lowering the charge. How close is the 33gr. charge to the recommended maximum?
