Why not consider a short action in 7MM-08, very good caliber and probally more suited to her small stature, Winchester makes a Classic Compact, I have one for my gf, she is small in stature and it fits her very well, they also make it in .308

The .270, .308, 7mm-08 are all great deer calibers. Much of it depends on her size and what kind of rifles she's had experience with.I might suggest a .257 Roberts or .243. Both are excellent, flat-shooting deer rounds that will do the trick with less recoil. I have a Winchester Model 70 in .243 Lightweight that I carry when I'm going to be trekking distances during my hunt. I have all the faith in the world in that little rifle.

I second DaRoosta and would add 7mm Mauser.Let the first impression be a light weight, light kicking rifle. Plenty of time for more power later if she wants it.

An extremly good female friend of mine shoots deer with a .243, got her first with it this year, she likes it, no problems with it. She is about 5'0, and 120.

Hey Stone, check the balistics on the 7mm08 the same as a 270 with a lot less powder and the recoil is a LOT less than a 270.

You guys !!! he gave us 2 options, but yeah I'd probably go with the 7mm-08 -same bullet but lighter load. Between the 2 choices you gave - I would choose the 280 and load them a little lite to start with. I like my 280 alot and my wife is very accurate with it. Dang women lets me know it too..

.270 and .280 are both great cartridges. You cant lose. Go with the best rifle deal.

Do'nt forget the best, in my opinion, 25-06. Use with 100 grain bullets, less recoil than 270 and 280 and kills just as dead. And with an extra 300 fps over the 243, lots better. Just my 2 cents worth.
