Well, a lot of people have asked this recently so if you check the back threads, you'll find a lot more; but I'll tell you this. I have both an MAS 36 and an MAS 49/56 and I really like both. So far as merits, they are both perfectly useable, with actions more than strong enough to handle either the 7.5 French or .308. They have fewer moving parts than comprable guns, and overall seem well desgined, if not too attractive. So far as .308 goes, many (most) of these guns have been converted by inserting a chamber insert. These have mixed reviews. A lot of people seem to experience jams as the weapon heats up. If, however, you are looking at one that has been properly rebarreled, it would be fine. My advice is stick to 7.5 French. Surplus is available, and new, non corrosive boxer primed ammo is now available- check out www.empirearms.com Reloading is also easy, as brass can be formed from 6.5X55 Mauser, trimmed to 54 and neck expanded, using standard .308 bullets, though the head on some Mauser cartridges is a bit undersized, most have no trouble. However, if you have the ability to purchase one from a gun store, where they stand behind their product, go for it- just be ready to take it back for tweaking.

I have one of the rechambered 308 ones and I had to take it to a gunsmith to have the chamber honed out. It seems to function OK now, but it would jam when hot before. Also, you've got to run ammo that is plenty powerful or you may notice some troubles here as well. Stay away from that Radway Green Brit. stuff. I've been shooting Hirtenburger and it runs fine!

I had two 49/56's in .308. They worked fine with military surplus ammo. I got a surprise using my reloads with softer commercial primers. Because of the floating firing pin, in every magazine full, I would get a double and triple slam-fire.

FYI, the mas 49/56 can shoot relaods if you use cci milatary style primers they are harder or if you lighten the firing pin to 270 grams.Revolation Arms revolationarms@hotmail.com
