A 44-40 should be good news. Besides being an authentic powerful accurate western cartridge, they load and unload easier than straight cartridges. You can buy a .44 special cylinder and get the benefit of a range of factory loads and reloads but Ill bet you when you compare shooting both, you'll prefer the 44-40.Shooting big bore pistol can get very expensive if you dont reload. It really isnt a big deal.

Thanks for responding! Is a 44 special comparable bore diameter with the 44\40?I always thought 40 cal S&W was same diameter?Where can I get a set of grips that don't have to be fitted? ivory or imitation pearl.I always questioned why fitting is needed, all other makes of revolvers have off the shelf grips including Vaquero.ThxPaul

To begin with, the 40 S&W is a 10MM the same as the .38-40. The .44-40 is a .44 caliber. If it is a true .44-40 it will be .427 dia.If it is a later model then it could be .429 or .430 dia.The only one I know of that made a dual >44-40/.44 Mag. is Ruger.Winchester and Remington both make.44-40 ammo, as do several others in the Cowboy Action sports.Reloading is still the best bet, and Win., Rem. and Starline all make the brass.Vet

I found the best prices for imitation ivory and other grips on boonetradingco.com If that is not correct look for Boone Trading Co.

Actually $19.00 a box is a very good price. Also I shoot both .44 special & 44/40 I don't think you'll see a big price difference between the two. You could always find someone who does reload and offer to split the cost of components. I wouldn't do that unless it was someone I really trusted though.WOODS

While there is a difference in bullet diameters,it's not a problem when it comes to shooting .429 bullets in a 44-40. A .002" oversized lead bullet will shoot well in a revolver. However, if you shoot the .427 jacketed 44-40 bullet in a 429 bore you might get poor accuracy. I use .429 bullets in a 44-40/44spl Colt SAA combination gun and also in an 1873 Merwin Hulbert revolver with good accuracy in both guns. Your barrel may very well be .429 and you can drive a lead ball or lead bullet through it and measure it. Use a wooden or plastic mallet to drive the ball flush with the muzzle, then a wooden dowel to drive it through.
