I received an old 1903 US Springfield from my Uncle years ago. It has an old scope mounted on it that I would like to get some info on. Stamped on the scope is, Model G88 The Maxwell Smith co. Los Angeles. I think it is about 2X. Anyone seen one of these? Thanks, muley

According to Old Rifle Scopes by Nick Stroebel, the Maxwell Smith Co. was in business in Los Angeles in the late 1940's.The G88 was 2 1/2X and was discontinued in 1948. It had a steel tube of .875" diameter and eye relief was 3 to 5". Value is given as $100 to $200.

Herschel....Thats great info. My Uncle killed many deer using that old '03 and scope. I've been thinking about mounting that old scope on one of my old .22's for squirrels. Of course, afterwards, it will go right back on the old '03 just like he left it.Thanks again, Ron
