"Drop-in" does that mean junk?

I've only been on this earth for 21 years, but in that short time I've learned to stay away from gun components that are "Drop-in." It seems that if it wasn't made by the factory, or if it doesn't have to be fitted by a gunsmith then it probably won't work worth a crap.Getting to the point, I was looking for some stuff for my Glock 22, and happend to come across a company called Lightning Strike who make Titanium Strikers (firing pins) for the glock that is supposed to increase locktime. Well I was thinking about buying one, then I read the advertised words "Drop In" and using my experience decided not to.My 2 questions are:Is the Lightning Strike Titanium Striker worth a darn? What components are safe to buy for drop in and what aren't. (i.e. Barrels, Bushings, Firing Pins, ect.)

I have used "drop-in" parts quite frequently, and have experienced no drops in performnce at all.I have a glock 22 with a "New York Trigger" and a #3.5 connector. Aside from ejector problems which have plaqued me only recently(I believe now it is caused by poor ammo), I have had a lot of improvement in performance. The combo of drop in components for me has really smoothed out the trigger pull, and the two-stage pull has been drastically reduced. I was going to try the metal guide rod, but from what i hear it's a waste. I haven't heard much about the strikers though.

I have been happy with GlockWorks parts. I have their 3.5 lb competetion connector, custom firing pin safety and stainless steel guide rod insert. If you are a reloader, I would recommend a Jarvis barrel. They are very accurate, shoot lead safely and fully support the chamber, which is important when reloading 40 S&W.Don't buy a Glock Rocket trigger connector, they are junk. Also, stay away from reduced power firing pin springs.

The phrase - "Drop-in" - means that the installation of the part(s) and/or other components are easily installed by an individual with a basic understanding of where and how the parts go. This still means that "some fitting" may be required, but not so as to requires major tools (i.e. - milling / cutting / etc).In general you want parts(s) that need just a little "tweaking" to be just right. Remember that each firearm is +/- a few demensions from each other.I don't care for the "Lighting Strike" tin. Strikers - I had one in my Glock 17 and then removed it. "I" didn't feel a major improvement for the amount out money that the Striker cost. I do have one of their tin. Safety Plungers installed though.[This message has been edited by compgunfire (edited 02-13-2002).]

The term "drop in" is not a dirty word; it just means that no gunsmithing is required to install the part.Neal

well , we have been "smithing" for over twenty (20) years , yes the term "drop -in"is supposed to mean "no gunsmithing required"thats not always the case , yes different guns have different tolerances (with-in a fewthousands of an inch-the thickness difference of a cigarette paper can be a lot)you are better off buying quality name brandparts and paying the price as to stay away from junk parts , and yes sometimes even the "drop-in" parts need a little (or a lot)od "smithing" to work RIGHT...dont be a homebutcher, if you get in over your head , go to a real gumsmith , its better and easieron all of us !!!!Ive been to the glock armoryschool , why do you think you need to increase the lock-time ???????d.a. sterans - gunsmith , gallery salessweetwater , tn.......

azgunnut2:I just bought, but haven't yet installed, a Wilson kit to lighten the DA pull on a Smith 29. Any experience, comment on those? I still have the receipt if it's a no-no.

I purchased a Drop in Barrel fro my Glock 23. It did require some fitting but works fine. Drop In does not always mean Junk. Let the Buyer Beware.

The BarSto Drop-In barrel for my HK USP is as accurate as the factory original.I can't say the same for the Federal Arms (?) barrel I bought for my Glock 22C; half the price, but required a set of adjustable Millet sights to get it back on aimpoint.

bwaI like the "Wilson" spring kits, but a true "trigger job" cost about 4-5 times as much.If you install the spring kit (its a "drop-in" !) and like the results, you'd "love" a professional trigger job.

Probably 40% of the high-dollar "competition" guns sold by the big-money builders (Baer,Wilson, etc.) are drop-in parts.

I bought a book on gunsmithing, not to start, just out of curiousity, and it shows the installation of a Wilson match barrel in a glock, and how its fitted, then shows a before and after. I appears to me to be a solid improvment thats worth the money so I'm adding that to my list, and will have it professionally done by my local gunsmith. Beyond that I'm going to get a magazine release from a Glock .45 and put in my 40 so I will have a slightly extended mag release. The book advises this if desired. I'll pass on the lighting strike firing pin, but I will install a factory trigger connector for a 3.5# trigger pull.

Bought a Tan/Blackweb stock for my Browning from Cabelas. This is a drop in. It shot sub 1" groups with factory ammo after the replacement. I was happy.
