Generally speaking, I believe it must be built before 1900.

According to the Federal Firearms Regulations Reference Guide (ATF P5300.4), it must have been manufactured prior to 1898.Neal

1898 is the 1968 GCA cutoff.

Actually, any firearm made IN or before 1898 is considered an "antique firearm", and is not considered a "firearm" under the provisions of GCA68. Black powder guns and certain reproductions are also in this category. This would include some guns that fire a cartridge, although I can't think of any that I would call "modern". "Antique firearms" can be shipped between nonlicensees."Curios and relics" are considered "firearms" for purposes of GCA68. Any firearm 50 years old is considered to be a C&R; certain listed firearms

I have purchased one antique at auction. It was shipped direct to me by priority mail. Most of the Sellers on auction sites state that the item qualifies as an antique and no FFL 01, or C&R 03 is needed.

The guys are right on.......antique IS 1898 and earlier. C&R covers most firearms 50 yrs.old and older. Incidently, it also covers some contemporary commemoratives made by Colt, Winchester, etc. Strange, huh?! Check out the ATF site for a list of guns (and ammo) covered: www.atf.treas.gov/firearms/curios/index.htm Hope this helps. Emery
