The PPK was not importable after the CGA 1968. To circumvent this, Walther put a PPK barrel and slide on a PP Frame and called it the PPK/S. I believe PPK stood for Polizei Pistole Kriminal.

I believe that sometime subsequent to 1968, possibly as late as 79 or 80, Walther started to manufacture the PPK (in its original configuration) in the U.S., thus making the (smaller) PPK once again available to Americans. I have heard that the U.S. made version of the PPK is not as well made as the German manufactured pistol, but I have no personal knoweldge regarding this. I own a German made PPK, and have no problems or complaints with it.
