Between 30-06, 7mm Rem Mag and 300 Win Mag what is the best overall, and or flat shooting round. Varmints to deer.

With the three you mentioned, the 7 mag will shoot "the flattest." But with varmits at 350 yards, you are going to still have to estimate distance and allow for drop.Personally, I use a 30-06. It may not shoot as flat as the 7 mag, but it doesn't have the recoil either. I have learned to estimate distances and know how much my round drops in the distances. I hit dogs that chase my cattle at 500 yards...with a rest.

I hate it,but the 7mm Mag with a 150 Barnes is point blank at those ranges.I am sure the capt or gb admin will whack this soon since they now allow fraudulent ads and won't even discuss them.I don't even want to ID the ads.cpermd

7mmMag with 115 Speer HP is very ugly on varmints!! A Remngton 700 with synthetic stock has less recoil than my 25-06BDL in wood stock. Also the 700 synthetic has proven to be (for me anyway) very accurate out of the box. Use a proven method of bore break in when new and you will be pleased!! I've tested and broken in 3 different 700ADL synthetics in 7mmMag and they all shot 3/4 inch or less consistently with handloads. The 30-06 is not near as pleasurable to shoot in my opinion. But opinions are like buttholes, we all have one!!

HEY! How about the .270? Less recoil than any of the above mentioned, shoots flat, easier on varmints, and good on deer. STIR, STIR, STIR!

as usual the .300 win mag gets no mention from the responses so far, as far as i am concerned most people are afraid of the .300 win mag which is why this round gets no respect. you ask about a magnum rifle round people cant wait to talk about their 7mm remington mag, well laddy freaking dah the .300 win mag is bigger and badder and not for those who perfer .22 and 20 ga shooting!

Someone mentioned a 115 gr. bullet in the 7 mag loudneboomer. My experience with shooting long ranges requires at least 150 gr. bullet in 7 mag to minimize wind deflection. Same with the 300 mag kickenstomper--it requires a heavier bullet. Heck, I can drop to the Sierra 110 gr. hollowpoint in the 06 and have about the same recoil as a 243. But, there again, the wind will give me a fit at long ranges.I use a 150 gr. bullet in the 06 and hunt everything from jack rabbits to bull elk. Does a number on them all...and I haven't gone punch-drunk from the recoil.

I love the 270. 7mm is a good flat shooting gun. If you can find them load the 162 gr. HP boattail. but they are hard to find

look, the 7mm mag does not recoil much more than the 30-06. that is one of the selling points of the caliber. The 300 doesn't recoil much more than the 7mm. That being said, of the aforementioned calibers, the 7mm mag is the best choice for "flatness". For impact, the 300 is the best. You need to decide if you are recoil sensitive, if you are not, then go with the 300 it will be all you ever need for north america. I would never go for an 06 over a 7mm mag.

Come on - the Mags are great - but if you are looking for a varmit gun - drop down to the .280 . 7mm bullet reloads various weights and same end effects. A little less on recoil than 7mm and more range than the .270

RCBS balistics software shows (using federal w/Nosler bullets) all using a 6" target dia300 Win 180gr +/- 3" to 284 yd -10.3"@350 yd30-06 150gr +/- 3" to 286 yd - 9.8"@350 yd7mm mag 160gr +/- 3" to 294 yd - 8.5"@350 yd270 Win 130gr +/- 3" to 300 yd - 7.9"@350 ydNot realy a lot of differance in drop is there? Tailgunners software is interesting, however this thread could go on for days, months, even years because we all have our own opinions about what the calibers will do. These veiws are a direct result of us going out and buying the particular guns we seem to favor. It's that old "my guns better than your gun" thing. Bottom line is any of the mentioned calibers will perform on varmints to deer to elk if proper bullet selection, proper shot placement and reasonable distances are acheived. You can't shoot a bull in the * with a BB-gun and expect him to fall!! (Although the vet hit one in the head with an axe last week and killed him deader than 4 o'clock) I have shot varmints with all the calibers except the 280 out to 450 yds. How dead is dead? I have shot deer out to 453 yds. measured with the 7mm Mag, again I ask how dead is dead?? Just go out and shoot something. A bad day shooting is better than a good day at work anytime!!

GD my post wasn't intended to slam anyone or any caliber. Sorry if you took it that way.I agree with you, the point I was trying to make is..If the retained energy, rifle / ammo accurcy, and shooter ability are all up to the job, than any of the above cartriges (and a whole bunch of others) will do the job equaly well.I just didn't state it as clearly as you did on my first attempt.Bob

Tailgunner-- Wow! And thanks for going to the trouble of looking it up. I'll have to admit, it surprises me the little amount of difference in drop.

Tailgunner, I'm not offended at all!! I was giving you a compliment!! I'm so new at this computer stuff I'd like to have the software you have. Trouble is, I'm too tight to buy it. I just think that there are so many opinions out there that this discussion could go on a long time. If the question had been "What would you choose if you could have only one gun?" I'd be up for days choosing between 22-250 and 25-06!!!
