do they make something that will go over the threads when the boss is removed so you can shoot without the boss and not damage the threads

Browning does offer, and Winchester did offer, a BOSS-CR. This device replaces the BOSS without the ports. Still allows you to adjust the vibration of the barrel without the recoil reduction and noise. I would call Winchester to see if they still have these available. If not, I would ask them if the Browning CR would fit the Winchester.

I beleive you can buy them from Brownells? I might be mistaken, but you should ask around, someone on this board advised us not long ago about a catalogue or company which sold them seperate (BOSS).

If not, get a gunsmith to take a piece of blank and thread it to fit your threads. You shouldn't have much in it.

A great rifle with a junk scope,....is junk.

Browning / Winchester sells ($18.50 + shipping) their B.O.S.S device without the muzzlebrake option, but you have to call & specify which caliber & finish. 1.800.945.5237.
