My choice would be a Kimber, but the price is substantially more than basic. Consider a used rifle. There are a number of good ones out that for around $100. Then you have a start on the price of the next one!

Ruger 10/22. I believe it is the best .22 plinker ever made.

I think I would go with the Ruger because of all the accesories available for it barrels, stocks, triggers, etc, etc, etc,.

I don't think you can go wrong wiht the 10/22.It is a very reliable rifle and the price is not to bad.

Tried several and settled on the 10/22 and would recommend them to anyone. Great gun.

I guess I'll be the oddball and say that if you want a very inexpensive but good plinker, the Marlin 795 is the way to go. Put a good little scope on it and there you go. I have one and it shoots great. Got mine for $99 at Academy.

Plinker? Marlin 60. Just about everyone has one. For the price, very hard to beat. Very reliable and eats most anything I feed it.

IMHO, Marlin 60. Can't be beat. I'm a big guy, and the 10/22 just doesn't "fit" me for some reason. Works great for my 8 year old though! And I hate that crappy magazine. I like tube fed!

10/22 as time and money permits add the following
    1. Hogue Overmolded Stock
    2. add some nice trigger upgrades
    3. Magnum Research Carbon Fiber Barrel
    4. and Top it all off with a leupold, or a nice scope of your choosing.

above recipe is best shaken and not stired :)
