I dont know the first thing about bows (besudes the obvious, and my Archery merit badge in the Boy Scouts).
I am receiving one of those FX-II crossbows as a gift: about 50 bucks, 80-lb draw, comes with cheapie scope, etc. here's a link:

Any info appreciated. I suppose it will be used for target shooting old magazines/newspapers.
What should a new-to-bows guy know? speed? bolt weight? bolt length? etc.
Anything, literally, appreciated!
Thanks!

What length bolts does it use?
I would suggest Easton XX75 bolts cut to length.
The highest grain broadhead I would use would be 85gr, due to the light draw. My Rhino Quad has 155lb draw and pushes a 20" bolt with a 125gr broadhead at 290-300fps. You can use this info to help determine how to set up your bolts. If they are shorter than 20", you may find that you will get in the 200-240fps range.
On second thought, it may be OK for deer if set up correctly. I have a problem with mine pushing the bolt right through the deer and burying the bolt in the ground. Lots of times you can't even find the bolt because it's so far under the dirt. You may have enough draw to get the bolt to stick in the cavity and as it bounces off of the trees and bushes while the deer runs, it will cause significant internal damage and produce a good blood trail. let me know about the bolts etc and I will offer anything I can. They are fun and accurate things, talk to your chiropracter and get the permit to hunt with it. I am going to put a red dot on mine this year, then.....look out.
A great rifle with a junk scope,....is junk.
It comes with a "package of ten 3" sharp pointed arrows, package of ten 6?" sharp pointed arrows, package of four 7" retrieval arrows" so I imagine it uses 6 or 7-inch bolts. I haven't seen the bow itself, so i don't know if it will accomodate a longer bolt or not. Looks like it can also take short little 3-inch bolts.
Does that help?
So far, you've told me everything I know about crossbows.:)
Also, is 85gr broadhead the weight of just the head, or the whole bolt? I am thinking in ballistic terms here, trying to figure the kinetic energy of a bolt/arrow.
Again, litwerally ANY info is news and helpful to me!
Thanks,
