Have you tried the SPRINGFIELD GOVERNMENT 10x56 , a little expensive but will hold up very well with big guns. depending on where you buy one will cost from 340.00 to 450.00

I use nothing but Leupold on high recoil rifles, .300, .340, .30-.378
I have never had a problem with any of them...I am interested to know what brands you have tried...

I have a 45-70 Ruger #1. I bought a used zeiss 4x scope, I shoot about 100 rounds with it so far and works great. You may want to try one of these, I paid 200 for it used.

Your going to have to be looking at high dollar scopes to handle that recoil and keep a zero.

    Ziess
    Schmidt & Bender
Swarovksi (Used on 50bmg, works great)
    Leupold High End
    Kahles

You might also look into Nikon, I have a bud who has one on his .45-70 guide gun, and seems to be holding just fine, don't know what particular model it is though, but I know he paid alot for it.

If I'm wrong please correct me, I won't be offended.

    chuck,
I have a Bausch & Lomb 2 1/2-10x40 on my 300 Weatherby for the past 12 - 15 years and never had a problem with it. It always kept it's zero. Lately, I'm switching some of my other rifles & my Weatherby to Schmidt & Bender and Zeiss. You just can't beat the quality of the German & Austrian lenses, including their construction.

    leupold mark 4
    nightforce extreme.

both handle the 50bmg well, they should have no problem with a 45-70.

A great rifle with a junk scope,....is junk.

From what I have been investigating lately the Bushnell 4200 has been tested to 10,000 rounds of 375 H&H magnum without a problem. I believe it is titanium and sealed the best, with seals and screw mechanisms.
I wrote the NRA recently and just this month see an article telling me more money means a better scope. Hogwash!!! It somewhat has to be how it is built, and better design has to be the answer as well as better materials. Titanium swells and contracts better than other materials so it does make sense that the Bushnell might be better than other scopes on the market currently , and the fact that the 4200 has been tested to 10,000 rounds of 375 might be your answer.

I looked at Leupold, Burris etc, and just picked up a 8-40 Custom scope shop, side focus Tasco and so far, so good., at about half the price of the others mentioned.
The Bushnell 4200 will probably my next scope.

I once read an article in The Precision Shooting magazine about scopes guys on bench rest circuit were using and which ones that were reported to have the least amount of trouble. The report said that the Bausch & Lomb 4200 was doing very good for having the least amount of returns to the factory.
I have never used one yet, all mine are Leupold, but I must admit that there are much better ones out there - NightForce would be my top choice tho.
