Well I guess this will be my final attempt before taking my 1911 to the smith. I just cant figure it out. Ive taken it apart several times now. The grip safety and manual safety do not function with the gun fully assembled. No visual machining marks noted. The funny thing is, the grip safety and manual safety both work until I put the main housing spring back on. Once its back on the manual saftey doesnt swing up at all and the hammer will drop with or without pressure from the grip safety. Kinda wierd isnt it? My ego is bruised. I can usally figure anything out but I think Im ready to throw the towel in and submit to the gunsmith. I just want to shoot it. But dont want to until its ready. The manual saftey is ambidexterous which could be a problem. ??????????

    thanks

    Larry

Just got my 1911. Everthing operates exept the grip safety and manual saftey. I took the gun completly apart and reassembled it and the grip safety still doesnt work. It seemed to work until I reinserted the mainhousing spring and then it just lies flat and doesnt respond to the sear spring. Any suggestions? I will try a few more times but if I cant get it I know a gunsmith that could probably fix it in 10 minutes but I just like to do things myself.

    Thanks

    Larry

    i am still in the market for a reasonably priced 1911 . . .

have been looking at colts and springfield armory models but the models with the low profile/ ajustable sights are overpriced if ya ask me.

getting to the point, i have discovered an auto ordnance model with the style sights that i want
the wuestion is; is auto ordnance a good manufacturer, how do they compare to the colts and springfileds that i have been looking at when it comes to accuracy and reliability?

Good morning. Was wondering if someone can give me the basic value of my army-issued Colt 1911 with original holster. It shows usual wear from combat but otherwise is in excellent shape. It was shot only once (for 3000 rounds) as the original issuee was the only GI who survived out of his platoon. Has not been fired since then.

Any info on this will be appreciated.

Hello all. I purchaesed a 1911 a few years ago and I am not sure what I have. I looked up the serial number and it said that it could be a Union Switch ands Signal or a Colt. It has a Colt slide but does not say colt on the frame. On the mag release side behind the triger are the letters GHD, on the trigger guard on the fron is a W. The serial number is 1687155. There are crossed cannons on the side just forward of the hammer. There is also some writing on the frame above and forward of the serial number. I can sen pics but can't figure out how to upload them here.

    Thanks,
    Rick

usually not a fan of "cheap" guns, but, had a Griffon 45 made in africa once, can be had for under 400 bucks. was accurate, fed several thousand rounds thru it with no problems, fit and finish were quite good. came with nite sites, extended safety, slide release, beaver tail grip safety, etc....wasnt a bad shooting gun. id still have it but traded it for a 1960s colt python....wouldnt you have done the same thing?

I've bought a Blue Detonics for $332 and a Stainless one for $470 delivered (there are some killer deals if your paitent) delivered and a series 80 Gold Cup for 620 delivered.
All American made, top quality, weapons
Springfeild has some decent imports - made in Brazil - I have owned the Champion, but sold it for the Detonics - and would do it again.
Infact, that is the only gun I don't regret selling, nothing bas about the Springfield - just like the Detonics SOOOOOOO much better.
    IMHO
    Good luck!

You might try looking at the AMT line of 45s. They were a pretty reasonable price and the quality was very good. BUT to be honest I haven't looked at them in a while. Good Luck! ...Mark

The Argentine Ballister Molina is a good inexpensive 1911. I said inexpensive, not cheap for they are well made guns. I came across one that had been referbished about six yrs ago. That was before they became readily available as they are now. Colt contracted them to make the guns during WW2. As colt could not meet the demand, the only difference between it and the Colt is the Ballister Molina does not have a grip safety. I am still impressed with the way it shoots. And it will shoot anything I put in it. Just my oponion I would not shoot hot loads in it, such as plus P. The only dislike from making this gun look sharp was the grips. I searched every where for replacement grips with no luck. I finally found some at numreich gun parts in New York. And since found a different style at CDNN. If you want as close to Colt as it gets buy one. Gun Broker ran some for under $300.00 bucks their reliable guns.

Really recommend that you hold on just a bit and look for something used. My first 1911 was a cheapie and a real pain. My second one wasn't and it's my favorite gun. Usually a budget 1911 needs a reliability job to be dependable whereas something a bit more works well from the box and many used quality guns have had a bit of smoothing out so you might be ahead of the game. If at all possible, make sure you get something that has true 1911 compatibility so you don't have to hunt up parts to make any changes down the road.

    Bandit,
Save your money and buy a quality arm.
The Ballister is poor quality, I believe AMT or aka
Arcadia Machine & Tool is history. The Argentine Systema
is a very good pistol. Norinco, like the old Ballister is
subject to questionable metallurgy. Buy a Colt or Springfield.

I picked up both my Colts at two different gunshows for $500 out the door, each. Ones a Ser80 Govt. and the others a Ser80 Commander.

Sometimes I like to just stand at the front door and watch people as they walk in, and when someone walks in with something I want, and the price is cheap, I buy it. Thats usually how you find the cheapest deals.

If I'm wrong please correct me, I won't be offended.

I would tend to agree with the recomendation of mballai, if you can hold out and save awhile get a good mid-upper range 1911 like a Kimber for little more money you'll get a lot better performance. If you cannot wait then there are several cheap knock offs you may consider. Lama, Rock Island, Israeli Arms, Griffon ect. ect. Ive heard that the Rock Islands are exact replicas of the government issue, a no frills basic 1911 for $320.00 Have you looked at any used guns, sometimes you can find a good deal on a used gun and be better off.....

When Clinton left office they gave him a 21 gun salute. Its a damn shame they all missed....
