I have a question about a mossberg 500a. I was wondering if I replaced the origanal 5 shot mag tube and 28in barrel with a 7 or 8 shot mag tube and a 18 or 21 inch barrel, do I need special tools for the mag tube or does it just unscrew. Any replies would be appreciated. thanx

You'll find that the tubes can be a bit tricky to remove, they are usually in pretty tight. The cost of the new tube and barrel will run almost as much as you can buy a used gun, over $150. Unlike Remingtons and Winchesters, where you can simply extend the tube, the Mossberg requires an entirely different tube starting from the receiver. Then you'll also need an entirely new barrel since the barrel scews into the end of the tube (which will now be longer than before. Several other brands of gun have the barrel go around the mag tube, so that when the tube is extended there is no need for a new barrel. You can simply shorten the existing barrel to the desired legal length. With the Mossberg extended tube, the overall capacity will become 8 if you stick with the 500 configuration. If you go with the 590 configuration it will have an overall capacity of 9. Either way the barrel length will be 20".

The cost of making such a conversion will prove to be over $150 and could be as much as $225 or more. At that kind of money, you'd be better off selling the one you have and just buying a 500 8 shot or a 590 9 shot and have it over with. Doing a conversion as you have planned, will prove cost prohibitive.

Thank you for that bit of info. I have a Winchester Defender 1300 7 shot also and just wondered if I was able to do that with my mossberg. If is that expensive I'll keep that one for hunting only.
    thanks again.
