I have ordered a Ram Line folder for my Paratrooper SKS. Do you know if these are a drop-in - or what are the likely problems that I will run into when installing. I have never fully stripped an SKS so this will be an experience. I want to have it ready as an optional rifle for next weekends Boar hunt. 5 guys and 6 rifles to choose from that are big enough for Boar. If the guys comming down were not Canadian, they could bring their own rifles.

I am not too familiar with the paratrooper type SKS. If it is like a norinco (like what most people have), then all you have to do is ..

put the safty on, press the button behind the trigger assembly in, and the whole reciver drops out. The only problem is the handgaurd. I had to take mine to a smith to have them remove the pin that holds the hangaurd on. I just got it back today. The SKS manual says to use a 1/8" center punch and tap it out but it is not quite that easy. Anyway, if your rifle is not the same I can not help you but I hope this helped some.

Most people find that the top handguard is the toughest part of the change-over process. The rest of the switch should take 2 minutes, but the handguard could be 15-45 minutes. I have had some that could be done in a couple of minutes, but that was the exception, not the rule. Quite often you'll need to fit the synthetic handguard into the gas tube assembly. They are often slightly too long to drop into the position without some fitting. You need not take the bolt carrier out or the top cover off. The whole receiver will just lift out of the old stock and drop into the new one. BTW, you should never need to take the crossbolt out of the old stock. So many people think they need to do that. I've handled 100's of SKS's, I've never needed to yet. If you need any further assistance let me know. LRARMSX@MCHSI.COM

lrarmsx is correct. the crossbolt is unecessary. the directions should say so. The handguard is the only Pain in the * part of the whole operation. I have found it somewhat frustrating on the many I have done for folks. There is a drift pin which must be punched out to remove the old handguard, get a good punch, I ruined a cheap one trying to get that pin out. Beware of your pressure when beating that pin also, if you want to save the original wood handguard, you will need to just take your time. I split it on one when I got tired of taking my time and applied too much "persuasion". Best of luck.

A great rifle with a junk scope,....is junk.

If you need the gun for this weekend and are not sure about changing the handguard leave on the wooden one for now.

ATF is right, unless you dont care about the wooden handguard being split or beat up you may want to leave it on, unless of course you want to fight with it for a while. The replacements dont have any value typically except for looks in my experience with them. One thing about the Ramline stock to watch for; on some of them the folding protion doesnt lock positvely and will jiggle somewhat, making accuracte and steady shooting difficult. Might not be a big problem for close pigs but then again the SKS is no benchrest rifle. My 2 cents

Thanks Guys - Just another one of those things I gotta get done before the trip. Just my luck I'll end up with the SKS and they will all get to shoot the nicer rifles, but at least I can hit with it (and faster than my bolts)....
