remington model 788

I have the opportunity to buy a 1972 Remington Model 788 in .308 Winchester. The owner says the weapon hasn't been fired more than a couple of dozen times, and I believe him. It is in very good shape, with a Deerfield 3-9x40 scope, a very nice leather sling and a box of unused cartridges. It works great, and shoots very acccuratly. I have no idea what the guns value is, and don't want to be ripped off. What is the outfit worth on average?

i recently have purchased a remington model 788. serial number is 600988. i would like to know when this rifle was manufactured. i've been told that you need to look at the left side of the barrel where it joins into the receiver and look for letters. well on my barrel (left side) i have a bunch of numbers and letters in a group. these are what is located on left side: xy 3, U A 8 84 (the 84 is the closest number where the barrel connects into the receiver). can anyone help? thanks.

I was given a Remington model 788, .308 with a short barrel. The barrel has some deep pitting. Is it possible to line the barrel for .243? or is there a source for replacement barrels?

    Thanks

Hello, I have a remington 788 in 222cal that I need to mount a scope on. Has to be a leupold or redfield mount. I have tried the long action and short action mounts and the holes on the receiver won't match up. You would think long action 30/06 short action 308/243/6mm/. Remington also made this gun in 44cal and 30/30. The part # off the redfied boxes are 511159 788la/511158 788sa.If any one has an answer or part# that would be greatr. Thanks.

You will probably have to have that made. If you can find something like a Boyd's stock for the 788, it is a simple matter to get it checkered and finished (Boyd's does NOT list the 788 in their catalog), but I imagine you will have to go with someone like Wenig's. They can turn out a beautiful stock, but be prepared to back up your checkbook.
