Good luck trying to pass that one on your wife. If I were you I would Make it easy on myself and check with the factory.

? what makes you think you need a new barrel???? can you expand on the info? i've seen many rifles return to good groups with proper cleaning, j-b bore cleaner, shooters choice, etc, etc, following the directions on the container.

I had a 788 in 308 a years ago, bought it cheap because I appeared to have been shot a lot and never cleaned.Talked to a good gunsmith about having it rebarreled,he told me he would have to thread a barrel because 788s have different threads than 700s.The price was resonable but it would take several months before he could get to it.So I took the old neglected rifle home and cleaned on it every afternoon for about a week using lots of Sweets and JB paste on it.It never looked as good as I though it should but when I took it to the range it would shoot about half inch groups on sand bags.

Try Dave Vanhorn in Arizona. He has rebarreled several 788's for me. He is reasonable and has decent turn around time. His number is 480-892-9630.
