concealed carry auto

I am looking to buy a 'semi high-end' compact 1911 style compact auto in either .40 S&W or .45 ACP (preferable .40 S&W). I would like a 3-4" barrel and the grip can be either full size or abbreviated. So far I'm considering the STI LS40, the SVI Tiki-T .40 S&W, or the Ed Brown Kobra Carry. If anyone has any of these pistols then I'd love to hear your comments, or if anyone has any other recommendations. Thanks!

For what you want you might want to look at the Colt Defender. They make them in both of the calibers but I personally own the .45. They are very light (22 1/2 oz) and still carry the full size mag cap (7+1). I have had mine for years now. It has never jammed and is very accurate for its size. Recoil is only slighly more than a full size. I did a side by side comparison with a full size .45 and a Commander and before the test I figured it would be very stout. I just couldn't believe it. There is hardly any difference at all. Try one. You won't be sorry.

I am not familiar with the guns you mentioned, however I bought a Glock 36 last week for my concealed carry. I never thought I would own a .45 but a Glock instructor allowed me to shoot his at armorer school and I immediatly fell in love with the gun. Its very accurate and controlable. I realize the Glock is a different style than you are considering but thought I would toss in my .02 worth.

I'd be inclined to go with the Brown or maybe have something cobbled by Les Baer or maybe Wilson.

FWIW I have a Glock 23 that feels just fine and I'd be perfectly comfortable using it for concealed carry if we ever get that right where I live. I'd go with a higher end 1911 piece only in .45, never in something smaller and the frame should be traditional style, not a hybrid.

Ed brown is real proud of that kobra carry! That is high end if i ever saw it. That Tiki-t is too new. The LS40 is the better choice. Royc38 had a good suggestion. I also like the Colt Lightweight Commander. Hard to find a good one though. But if you do and have the custom work done yourself, I feel you would be the happiest .40 gunner around.

I always have liked that gun. Forgot the actual weight of it though.

Ah! the ED-Brown one of my favorites. This gun is so 1911 its smoothe no sharp edges Beveled mag well. This gun was built for the shooter by a shooter. Its easy to conceal, and theres all kinds of leather availiable. Mine rides in a Kramer belt scabbard. Anyway there are so many choices. I think I might go to a well stocked gun store or show and try out a variety to see which one fits your hand best, or which one has the best point of aim. Its hard to choose I know theres alot of fine arms makers out there.

    Good Luck.

You might want to look at a Kimber CDP Pro 45. It has most of the desirable features in the $1000 range. It has full size aluminum frame, 4" barrel, night sights. I got one a year and a half ago, and have been happy with it. I carry it or a Glock 30.

The Defender has a 3 inch barrel, is stainless/aluminum, and will accept full size mags.

Several good recamendations here - I
    'd add one more.
    Detonics .45 compacts
Company is defunct however - the pistols produced are top quality and at the time the first compact .45 on the market.
    I've bought blue mat Mk1 for $325 and stainless Mk6 got $550
