I arrived in the Norfolk, VA area this past Friday, and I will be in Virgina until the 29th of this month... does anyone know of any decent gun shops or shows in the area?

Bert, get the phonebook and look for listings in Suffolk. There was an upscale one there that dealt in high end collectables when I was there. Don't remember the name though...

Hey, Bert - you're on my home turf! The closest show is in Richmond on May 18-19th at the Richmond Raceway. It's about an hour and a half drive.

You need to go to Tidewater Military Traders/ Classic Firearms at 1329 Harpers Rd #102, in Virginia Beach. It's right next to the Oceana Naval Jet Base, about 20 minutes from Norfolk N.O.B..

Robert House has a huge shop with over 600 guns and all of them are collectibles and for sale. He's a good guy with fair prices. I've bought several from him and he was nice enough to ship all of my handguns to NY for me when I moved up here.

Here's his website with gallery: http://classicfirearmsandechoesofglory.com/

I wish I was "home" right now as I would love to meet up with you!

While in Norfolk, do yourself a favor and go eat at the "Freemason Abby" restaurant. It is an old Church built by the Freemasons in the early 1800's and converted to a restaurant. Last time I ate their a few years ago, the food was fantastic. We also did a tour of the battleship "Wisconsin" I think. It was docked right there by Nauticus and you could check it out. Not sure if its still there now.

    Regards, Don

The Mariner's Museum has the turret and propeller from the ironclad USS Monitor on display. Very historic.

Go by Bob's Gun shop on Granby Street in downtown Norfolk.I bought a lot of nice used modern rifles, military guns, S&W's and Colts there about 5 years ago. I moved after that and now live in the Blue Ridge. I heard the owner died so things might have changed some, but I believe a lot of the employees are the same. Also, check out the pawn and gun shops on Mercury Blvd. in Hampton, and pawn shops in Newport News on the North side near Ft lee.

Bob's has nothing but new & current used, highly-overpriced guns. However, the Douglas MacArthur Memorial is well worth visiting in downtown Norfolk. The General and his wife are buried in the rotunda and the museum is incredible - and free. [:)]

You should definitely visit the oceanfront in Va Beach. It's only 15-20 minutes away and I think you'd really enjoy it (as long as you go before Memorial Day weekend!). It's a beautiful beach & boardwalk with plenty to see and do. A lot of outdoor cafe's, too. Two of my favorites are Mahi Mah's and Chix Cafe', both at 7th St. @ the oceanfront.

Also, the Neptune Wine Festival is on Sunday, May 19th at the oceanfront: http://hamptonroads.com/events/details/40899

Feel free to e-mail me if I can be of help on where to go or not to go. I know that area very well. I'll also send you my phone number if you'd like. I kept my Virginia Beach number so it's a local call for you if you call from the base.

I'd invite you to come see some REAL shotguns instead of the tomato stakes you're so fond of, but

Since you'll be in VA for a few weeks if you have time and have not been, go see the NRA museum up in Fairfax. It's free and TONS of guns. The Manassas National Battlefield is also up that way and they also have guns in their museum.
