Yugo SKS ejection prob

A friend got a Yugo SKS and brought it to me to look over. It's not ejecting. Yes, I thoroughly cleaned all the cosmoline off and yes I have the gas port selector in the right position (tried it in both positions even.)

The rod isn't pushing back the bolt nearly far enough, maybe a half inch and that's it. It doesn't eject the spent round and of course it doesn't strip the next in the mag.

Is this something that can be home fixed or will he have to take it to a gunsmith?

Lot of folks have had problems with the gas port on the grenade launcher, leaking. I've never worked on one, but there are a lot homebrew fixes on the various online forums, that have SKS boards.

GOOGLE is your friend! Start by searching the pertinent forums, U Tube etc.

Put a paper clip around gas system ( plunger)? by the selector Also check for pluged gas ports and or rust /carbon build up.

Replace gas tube and piston. That has worked for me before.
