A friend owns a model 1903 30-06. He would like to know more about the gun, unfortunately I could not tell him much about it. I plan to take him out to the range to shoot the gun, but it's missing the front site. Anywhere I might order one? Also wondering when the gun was last produced? He has had it about 15 or 20 years, does the gun have any substantial value? (its in great shape.) A gunsmith suggested that he could modify the gun so that you could mount a scope on it...this seems like a bad idea to me, any input? thanks, KW

We need a lot more information before we can tell you anything. For starters, we need serial #, exact markings on receiver & barrel, markings stamped on all metal parts, type of finish on all metal parts, description of rear sight, stock markings and finish, alterations, damage, % of finish, bore condition. Even then, we may still need a photo.Oh, and get back to us BEFORE you go to the range; early '03's are not safe to shoot.Neal[This message has been edited by nmyers@home.com (edited 01-10-2002).]

Springfield Armory MfgNumber's 800,000 and under (1903 to 1918) have case hardend receiver's. 800,000 to 1.275,787 have double-heat-treated receiver's. Rock Island from 1 to 285,207 casehardened receivers. 285,208 to 319,921 improved heat treatment. 319,922 and above nickel steel. You need a high number over 800,000 for Springfield Armory to be safe, and not Rock Island. Unless nickel steel

The missing front sight could indicate it is a 1903A4. If so, it is a very valuable gun and should not be modified.

Ditto, 22WRFVery important, the o3's receivers, numbered below the serial numbers given from the respective armories, are very brittle, and have been known to disintegrate upon shooting, and have caused serious injury, to the shooter as well as bystanders.IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT THESE RIFLE NOT BE FIRED, ACCORDING TO THE NRA.The receivers have been known to actually shatter by striking them with a plastic mallet. As, 22wrf states, they are defective do to a single heat-tretment as opposed to double heat treatment for those manufactured after these serial numbers. As stated before, if this rifle is originally configured it could be very valuable.Be Safe..[This message has been edited by turbo (edited 01-11-2002).]
