Colt never made the AR-180. It was made by the original ArmaLite in Costa Mesa, California from mid-1969 through mid-1972. In 1972, production was moved to Japan, where Howa made AR-180s until 1975. Production then moved to England, where Sterling built them until 1983, when Sterling and ArmaLite were both sold. The site mentioned has parts, as does a dedicated AR-180 site, the name of which escapes me right now, but a search should turn it up. The current ArmaLite is introducing a new version of the AR-180, and a few of the parts will be interchangable. Supposedly, ArmaLite will have parts for the early guns as well, but I remain skeptical. What parts do you need?

JudgeColt--You beat me to the punch. Have you heard how the new AR-180 compares/differs from the old AR-180? This rifle interested me but it's too new to hear anything other than what Armalite has said about it in their ads. Any pros/cons of the old AR-180 that you recall and have time to share?

idsman75, http://www.cruffler.com/ has a very good review of the new AR-180B. I saw the AR-180B prototype at the 2001 SHOT Show and was put off by the polymer receiver. However, as an original ArmaLite fan, anything that deviates from that which came from the original Temple in Costa Mesa often disappoints me, so my bias is showing. The main thing that bothered me was that I had the impression that the receiver and stock and pistol grip are all one piece. In looking at the cruffler article, I am now not sure that is the case. A friend told me that "Guns & Ammo" has an article on the AR-180B this month, but I have not had a chance to look.Standing alone, the AR-180B is an outstanding value, and should be a strong seller if ArmaLite can get it in volume production within a reasonable time. (I am a little confused as to why a new rifle is being introduced when the long backorder situation at ArmaLite on current is what it is.) ArmaLite was promising delivery early in 2001 and they are just now starting to trickle out, so it is a typical ArmaLite situation. The new AR-180B will be fairly inexpensive as these types of rifles go and will accpet M16 magazines, a big plus. The AR-15-type fire control parts will also allow inexpensive and readily available repair of those parts. The promise of original repair parts by ArmaLite seems unlikely to me because there was a parts list in an ArmaLite catalog a couple of years ago that is not in the current catalog. I will ask ArmaLite about that issue at the 2002 SHOT Show next month.

JudgeColt,Thank you for the input. I stopped subscribing to G&A awhile back due to the fact that their gun reviews seemed more and more like advertisments. Actual experience by average gun owners with firearms reviewed by the magazine often conflicted with what was said. GUN TESTS is now on its way. However, I will have to look for the current issue of G&A just out of curiosity now. I am wondering if any of these AR-180's will be on display or for sale at the Des Moines fairgrounds gun show at the end of this month.
