When will we see the 17 Hornady Rimfire Magnums hit the market and who's going to chamber them?

Did anybody get to see the new rifles in 17 HRM at the big show? Are they going to be on our dealers shelves soon?

New England Arms is also chambering a Handi-Rifle for the cartridge. If it catches on even a little bit, expect a Browning Micro.

Thanks crisisbill and AntiqueDr for your replies. My new Shooting Times came yesterday! Looks like there will be at least one more gun in the safe before long!! If we'd had something like this as kids, thre wouldn't be any groundhogs left so I guess its's good we didn't have them!!

Sounds like an interesting caliber if they dont kill it off with high priced ammo.I think Id rather see a shortened 17 Hornet that would reload between 1000-3000fps.

I read the article on this, I didnt see the purpose of this cartridge. I really didnt like the wind drift table, thats a lot of margin for error. I'd have to re read the article to remember exactly what bothered me the most about it, but I know I thought, what the?, why?, no I cant see having this caliber. I dont even recall hearing people ask for this type of cartridge.I think v35 has something with his idea. I do think the ammo. would cost even more than the rimfire magnum ammo, dont you?

Hey Sarge, why do we need 338 Ultra mags, or Ar-15s orBMG-50's? Because somebody wants one. They don't need it, they want it!! I don't need the big stuff but this little one might be fun. As far as the wind thing, it's not meant to be a 500 yd prairie dog gun so you ought to do like Clint Eastwood said: "A man's gotta know his limitations"

Good point, we dont NEED some guns. I just cant figure though, cause the ammo is gonna be expensive, I would guess, and its just that it seems like a high speed close range varmint gun, that any varmint gun we can reload for will do better a better job of. Anybody here remember the 5mm rimfire, I think they called it that. It was a handy little round also, I have heard, but it died rather quickly. I would not be surprised if this round goes the same way of the 5mm rimfire. The caliber of that 5mm by the way was nearly halfway between a .17 and a .22/.224 at I believe .204. The bullet traveled at a published 2100fps and that bullet weight was more than double at 38gr., so its energy level would come out to @370 ft. lbs. much better than the published 250 ft.lbs. of the .17. As for the accuracy of the 5mm, I can not say, but the results published in the Shooting Times article were not impressive to me. If that is the best accuracy we will see from a production gun, at a reasonable price, I dont see it takeing on the role of a true varmint gun either. Thats my take on it, but who knows.

I think you will be surprised, the ammo is fairly cheap, and readily available, Midsouth Shooters Supply is taking advanced orders http://www.midsouthshooterssupply.com/item.asp?sku=0000383170 and at only $7.69 a box a few cents more per round than the 22 WMR and I believe it will catch on rather fast
