Replace my Ruger .40 cal auto or no?

Yeah, I know, this topic has been addressed before. But it has been tough to get a straight answer from the gun store guys. Okay, I wrote about this months ago. I have a new Ruger auto-pistol in .40 cal. Jammed like crazy. Tried 8 brands of factory ammo, new mags, new grips, new stance, it got better, and it still jams. I sent the gun back to Ruger, at their request in the middle of December and hope to get it back soon. I am thinking about replacing it. I want one that is accurate, reliable, and not too too expensive. Any suggestions? Most tell me just keep saying keep it.

When you get it back try it out, then make your decision. It sounds like you got a defect in that pistol and if Ruger fixes it you will have a reliable weapon. Also you didn't say what kind of jams you're getting. Stove pipe, ftf, fte, etc.

I just bought a new Sig Mauser M2 in 40 cal. & just love it. Its a bit on the heavy side but it shoots real well. Nice safety features as well.

Often, Ruger will replace these items as well. Wait to see the outcome of that first. You may well find that it will operate correctly when it is returned.

To those who responded, I am on several forums and your answers explain why this is my favorite. I get such good advic! Based on some good advice, I have made purchases that turned out to be great deals! For the first 200-300 rounds the gun failed to extract. That stopped and then stove-pipe city set in. The rounds fail to clear the port. I have many Rugers so I am going to take your advice and give it a chance. I have had 3 to 3 and a half inch groups, free hand, at 25 meters. Again, I really appreciate your comments!

When I had a similar problem and posted about it here, I got a flood of email from people who said "Go with the ones you know to be reliable". I haven't had a single jam with my Sig 229, or my Glock 23 or 26, or my Beretta 96 Brig. My point.... well I'll just say "Go with the ones that you know to be reliable".christian

I HAVE HAD A RUGER 40CAL FOR SEVERAL YEARS AND AM SHOOTING IT RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX. I HAVE NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH IT. I SHOOT BOTH FACTORY AND HAND LOADS. IN MAYBE A 1000 RDS I HAVE HAD ONE INSTANCE OF FAILURE TO EJECT SPENT CARTRIDGE. I LOVE IT. I CARRIED IT FOR ABOUT TWO YEARS AND OTHER THAN BEING HEAVY I FELT I COULD TRUST IT TO OPERATE IN CASE I NEEDED IT. CARL

The guys above are absolutely right about giving the 40 another try. I have a 9mm version which fed a few thousand rounds flawlessly. BUT... If you do try iy out and it still doesn't work, hunt around online and you can find yourself a nice piece for relatively inexpensive. I bought a Glock 22 with Trijicons on Gunbroker.com for $355. I've even seen a few since then.UPDATE: In fact, I see one for sale now for $338 ending in a few hours...2865880[This message has been edited by niklasal (edited 01-16-2002).]

CAandres35 I really appreciate your post. I own about six Ruger products, have owned more, and was really surprized when this pistol began to jam right out of the box. I must have averaged 6 to 8 jams out of every 20 rounds. I tried 5 different magazines (Ruger) and 8 different name brands of ammo. But I like the size and feel of the gun. So, I am going to take your advice. The best people to ask are people who shoot these things. One final question. How would you rate its acccuracy say, up against the CZ, Glock, and Beretta line? I have been able to get 3 to 3 and a half inch groups at about 25 meters. At first the accuracy was terrible, but it turned out it was me. A different stance, grips, and practice cleaned up most of the problems. I sure like shooting the 40s and hope to get it back soon. I lied, one last question. When shooting in doors I sometimes have trouble seeing the sights real well, hey, I'm over 40...Does anyone make those light gathering green/red sights for these pistols?Again, thanks for the advice.
