sizing die question

Awhile back, I posted on the want ads forum that I had bought a set of incomplete .32S&W long dies from an estate sale for a song, at $2 for the seater and case expander. The sizer die is missing though. A set of new Lee dies only costs $21 from most retailers, though the Lee factory charges far more. I contacted Lyman, Lee, RCBS, and a few others and they all said they would be happy to sell me a sizer die only for $19.95 on up. Makes no sense if I could get a new set of dies for $2 more. Now I see that Lee offers a carbide sizer die for .32 auto on its own for $12.95. Tell me, if I ran my .32 S&W shells through this die, then expanded using the other dies I have, should I have any trouble? I guess I'm really asking, will the .32 auto resizer resize to the same size as a .32 S&W die?

You will not be able to get a full-length re-size as the 32auto case length is 17mm whereas the S&W is 23.3mm. Dia. would be the same but to use the auto die you will need a longer pin. If it were my choice, and taking into consideration the KISS factor, I would get a new, complete set.[This message has been edited by oneshy (edited 01-13-2002).]

Well how about this... I decap with a universal decapper (already have it) resize with the .32 auto die, expand and seat with my incomplete set. A lot of trouble perhaps, but would this work?

Buy a new set of dies. The seater die from the sale will allow you to have seaters set up for two different bullets and you won't have to monkey around with reseting the seater when you change loads. I buy every seater I can get my hands on. Once a load is established the seater is marked and I don't have to worry about resetting it.

oneshy is correct. You will not be able to full length size 32 S&W with 32 ACP sizing dies.

Jonk, I size 32 S&W Long in my 32ACP Lee carbide die on a regular basis. The carbide insert is about 1/4" long and beyond it the die is actually larger on the inside all the way to the threads for the decap pin collet.

It should work. A sizing die doesn't have a stop at the end of the sizing area.
