I am hoping that someone will know the maximum effective range of a .40. I would really appreciate the help.

I'll make an * of us both and assume you're talking about .40s&w out of a handgun and probably JHPs.I'd say about 50 yards.

If you're asking the max range that an average shooter can consistently maintain hits on a silhouette target with an average out-of-the-box .40 S&W autopistol, I'd say 50yds. from an unsupported position. A prone or sitting postion can extend this out to 100yds. or more.

I know an individual who can consistantly knock down 8" steel plates at 100yds with his Glock 35 .40s&w using factory FMJ ammo. (Is a professional shooter by the way...) But it shows that for knocking down steel plates its effective out to at least 100yds, and the person who posted this did not mention what it was effective against.By the way, he can do it with a 9mm, and with a .45acp 230gr FMJ... No bull either...

I appreciate the comments. I am talking about quality duty ammo, maximum range before the round begins to drop. Before you need to start taking in to account, Kentucky windage. I apologize, the term "maximum effective range" is a military term for "It won't do you any good to shoot before the enemy is within "X" amount of yards. When we had the colt .45 it was 50 yards.

The .45acp 230gr military load drops 4" at 100yds, its still effective (will penetrate, wound, kill a person), but I wouldn't put it much past that, its about the end of the line. I'd honestly say that its probably about the same for the .40.
