STG 58 / L1A1 (Automatic?)

I have decided to purchase an STG 58 or L1A1. I intend to get a class 3 Lic. to allow me to own an automatic weapon. Which of the two could I purchase and later be able to convert to automatic. What specifically do I need to look for or have as part of my new rifle. I prefer the STG 58.I get the message... That's why I posted the question. I am not that knowlegable on gun laws and the such so I turned to the experts. I still don't know what I want. Can I get a pre ban FAL, STG 58, L1A1...From who? Maybe I'll just get an STG 58 from DSA. I hear they make quality stuff. (BUT) I would just like an origional military weapon...like the ones you use to be able to get before all this anti gun and assault weapon crap hit. If you know what I mean.[This message has been edited by Michael Baquet (edited 02-23-2002).]

You can't do it.Since May 19, 1986, it has been illegal to make a new Class III weapon (with the exception of LE and export). The only way that you can legally own one is to buy one that was registered before that date.Neal

If you get a Class 3 license and do business, you can then buy a PreSample FA FAL.When you retire, you may keep it.BATF will phase this out soon I believe.Otherwise, you have to buy a Pre 86,or be a C2 mfgr and sell to LE agencies. This is the wrong board for this as I think there are very few here who know the laws and have the friends in the BATF to ask.cpermd

My thoughts are... if you want a class III, just spend the money to purchase one, instead of spending the money to get a license to manufacture them, and then having to build the gun. If you spend the money for the license, and then build the gun, the only people you can sell it to is LE. If you just buy a registered class III, and you decide to sell, you can sell it to individuals in your state, or thru a dealer to people anywhere in the country (where class III's are allowed)
    Have Gun, will travel

I think I found a loophole in the laws for converting to full auto.Weapons can still be converted, but for law enforcement only, and has to be done by a person or company with a Class II liscence. Then the department can decide to get rid of it and have it transfered... Get it. So if you have a friend who is high on the food chain in a sheriffs office or something, then you get him to purchase the gun and have it sent to be converted for the department under their letter head, and when its done, have the dept. sell it to you and just go thru a class III dealer to handle the paper work, fully legal.

Or you could just make one yourself and keep your mouth shut.

If you do what lee says in his 2nd post, you must also pray to God and all things Holy you don't get caught with it ... I believe the current penalty is $250,000 or 15 years in federal prison or both ... per violation ... seems to me that the Pre-86 would be cheaper.
Here's a thought: Let's make criminals responsible for their crimes ... ...Not blame society and the tools they use!kimberkid@gunbroker.zzn.com
If you really desire something, you'll find a way ?
? otherwise, you'll find an excuse.

I'm not telling anyone to go out and jump off a bridge, I only speak my oppinion nothing more. If you decide to go jump off a bridge because I said so, then I hope you never breed. I have however been reading federal firearms laws, and am not telling you I found a loophole, I just think I've found one, and am asking questions, I have currently emailed the ATF about my question, but have yet to recieve a response.
