454 Brass cut down to 45 Colt lenght

I like to make some really hot loads for my Ruger Bisley in 45 Colt. I'd like to duplicate the Cor-Bon factory load of a 265 grain bullet at 1300 FPS. Any one done this? Any suggestions for powder/primer? Any advantage to trimming some 454 cases to use in the 45 Colt? I know the 454 cases are heavier, thicker, stronger than 45 Colt. Thanks

and case capacity will be reduced because of the thicker proportions of the case. Therefore caution needs to be observed when using the 45colt data (for ruger and tc)most reloading manuals will say 10% reduction and work up again.

I have just one comment. 454 cases are expensive, I would not cut them down for .45 colt loads, for that reason alone.

I have a bunch of 45LC brass and cowboy loads I'll sale and you can load them again. Most of the 100-150 empties are once fired100-250 rounds of cowboy loads (factory)

I appreciate the input...anyone have any info on good, SAFE, hot loads for the 45 Colt. I know Speer lists loads for the Rugers and Contenders, but they are still a little light. I want to get a 265 grain bullet going 1300 FPS like the Cor-Bon load that costs $30 per box of 20!

You COULD cut down .454 brass for use in a .45 Colt chambered gun, but WHY?Triming .454 Casull brass to .45 Colt length also requires turning the necks so the bullet will properly seat without bulging the case. Further, as stated above, powder capacity is reduced, so you must consider this when loading (there is no data commercially available for this). Finally, you can load .45 Colt cases to very hot levels for use in an APPROPRIATE firearm (see Hodgdon's manual for Ruger .45 Colt loads). I have gotten .44 mag velocities from a .45 Colt Blackhawk revolver, with 250 gr. bullets (compared to 240 gr. .44 mag bullets). If you want more performance than that, you're either in need of a different gun or a masochist who loves to have his hand twisted off by excessive recoil. In short - don't waste your time and effort trying to make something that isn't needed. Also, CorBon uses powders that are not available to you. If you have to have a load like theirs, buy their ammo. You can't duplicate all factory loads - the components aren't all available. If you are really adventurous, and want to let me get a million dollar life insurance policy on you, then I'll tell you what Elmer Keith did to make ultra hot .44 Special loads. If you try, I might as well get rich when you blow your hand off.[This message has been edited by luger01 (edited 02-24-2002).]

AFLAC, the insurance company with the duck, it has insurance that will pay out for individual digits, hands, feet, limbs, etc. that are lost in accidents, I suggest you get one of those policies.

Attn: Robsguns....I said I like to make hot loads, I didn't say I make dangerous loads. Thanks for the insurance advice, but its not needed. If you don't have constructive suggestions, then don't waste everyone's time with nonsense.

Everyone else, thanks for your input. I am going to shelve the idea of using the 454 brass for 45 Colt loads.

Chris8161, As has been said before, if you have thin skin, dont bother asking questions. I was not rude to you, nor did I chastise you for asking what I believe to be a question that should not even have been asked, but since you had to go the rude route, there you go. If you want to shoot a 45 colt, shoot a 45 colt, if you want to shoot a more powerful gun than that, buy one. Rudeness does not come from my fingers often, congratulations. And my comment was directed along the same lines as the comment above mine regarding the insurance policy, it was good of you to single out my post, because I have no problems with letting you know exactly how I feel. Should you feel like discussing this further you may email me robsguns@hotmail.com, as I dont feel like wasting any more board space with your question.Oh, there is an excuse for your rudeness I suppose. I see you only registered here on the 18th of this month, and have a total of 17 posts. So you have just come over to our forum and have no idea how we conduct ourselves, which is professionaly, at least most of us. Nor do you have any idea who any of us are, or that we usually bend over backwards to be helpful to new members of the board. When on occasion we feel that a question is dumb, we keep it to ourselves, and still try to answer it. If on occasion we make light of a question by jokeing with the poster of the question, it is exactly that, light hearted humor. If you stay around long enough to learn these things before becoming rude, you will avoid a lot of heartache for yourself. If you cant take a joke, this isnt the place to post. It would also be my advice to you that you dont walk into a new environment and begin judging what is and isnt a waste of everyone's time, considering that your question may indeed be viewed a waste of other's time.

I think it you who has the thin skin my friend! I am a fan of light hearted humor but your response was not humorous, just patronizing and condescending. I don't mind constructive criticism, but your post was not constructive and just seemed to me to be idle chatter.

If you think that was patronizing and condesending(spelling), you might want to take a walk through the archives here, get to know how things work around here, and then ask your questions. I'm afraid your feelings may get walked on again if you dont, what with all the patronizing statements that are made here. If you like humor, then you just dont know it when you see it, at least as I do, and I've yet to have anyone besides you take offense to anything I've said. Stick around a while, but dont jump up and down next time someone suggests you do something you dont find humorous, take it in stride, we all do.

I think the fact that them 454's use small rifle primers might make a difference, but I ain't for sure. Might want to check that out as well.

Hey Robsguns, I was mistaken, I'm terribly sorry! I thought the title of this forum was "Ask the Experts". I didn't realize it was "Frustrated Stand Up Comedians answer Gun Questions". Take it from me, you're not a funny person. I restate my case, that when a person asks a question on this forum its because he or she is looking for some anwers to a question..not patronizing attempts at humor. I would be willing to bet that when you are haunting some gunshop and another customer asks the person behind the counter a question, you feel the need to answer the question, even if you have no idea what you're talking about. I am not going to waste any more time bantering back and forth with you. If you want to continue to roam the message boards, inflicting your "humor" on people, then have fun! At least it keeps you off the streets where you might actually cause some damage!

Let me know if you ever need help figuring out how to buy a gun that was meant to shoot a cartridge as powerful as the one you're trying to make. That is what intelligent shooters do, as opposed to asking advice from people they do not know, who may or may not know what they are talking about, on how to develop a cartridge in a manner which is obviously unsafe. Get a book, try reading, and solve your own problems, you'll be much safer that way, and you wont have to put up with people like me, who you obviously can not tolerate. Wow, I cant believe this thread hasnt got poofed yet, I've just been counting the time that has elapsed. It hasnt even been locked yet. Someone must not be feeling too well, hope you're ok Capt.
