I am an equity analyst on Wall Street and am looking at investment opportunities in companies that manufacture riflescopes. One company in particular is Meade, which owns Simmons, Weaver, and Redfield. If anyone can offer advice as to the price vs. quality of their products, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

I will get shunned for this but, IMHO, the burris signature series is at least the same quality as a leupold. I bought the 4-16x44 with the electro dot out of natchezss.com for $485 and it is just as clear and accurate in it's adjustments as the vari X III was that I took off. Plus, you get the illuminated dot all for less $$ than a comparable leupold. I like leupolds, but I really try not to buy any but the tactical models. Now for a real savings, and if it not for a tactical or benchrest aplication, the Bausch and Lomb elite series are great scopes in the $300-$400 range. Just my .02

JustC and I pretty much agree on scopes. In optics, perhaps more than most things, you get what you pay for. Generally the higher the price, the better the scope. Some will say you are paying for a name, but in point of fact, the reason the name is worth something is the quality of the product. In scopes most have decent glass and the price difference comes from the coatings used on the lenses to transmit light to your eye with minimal reflection and refraction inside the scope. Look for fully, multi-coated optics. Most use BAK-4 glass which is good. My top choices are Burris, Leupold and Nikon, buying which ever has the best combination of magnification and objective diameter for my purposes. I tend to buy low power scopes for deer, elk, pronghorn and javelina hunting, usually 1.5-6x or there about. The higher end Bushnell (Bausch and Lomb) scopes are also good. I tend to avoid Simmons, Tasco etc. Check Natchez mentioned above by JustC and also www.bearbasin.com and www.eagleoptics.com for good prices and selection as well.

One of the clearest / brightest scopes I have used is the Shepherd, there a little more pricy but if your as lousy at guesstamating ranges as I am they are worth it in the long run. IMOBob

I'm surprised nobody mentioned Nikon Monarch series before now! They are the most impressive scopes for the money I've seen and used.

The Tasco scope works fine for me and the "price is right!"

pentax lightseeker 30 is the only way to go. optics are not an area to skimp in. the quality is there and the others cant even begin to come close in terms of light gathering, clarity, and shot after shot accuracy. remember, why buy a cadilac and put painted white spoke wheels and cheap tires on it? buy the best now or buy the junk and still have to step up later. its your money but where i come from you do it right the first time.
