I just got a Freedom Arms 454 casull and i am considering mounting a scope on it. Freedom Arms recomend a Leupold or Weaver 2x or 4x? Does anyone have any suggestions for a scope that will stand up to the recoil of the big 454? all the best

I had the unfortunate opportunity to fire a Ruger two inch revolver today in .454 Casull caliber. No one will ever have to advise me not to buy one or shoot one again. If you are in the clutches of a Grizzly and pumping a couple of these slugs into him will save your life, go for it. Otherwise firing this gun is pure punishment. Not just the high twisting recoil, but the force against your palm between the thumb and trigger finger is where the pain is. The only 4's I'm into are 45 ACP, long Colt or 44 special. Yes, this gun can be loaded down to 45 Long Colt so it isn't a total loss.

I'd think hard about putting a scope on it. The eye relief problem that frequently occurs can be costly when shooting at live targets, as shots that arent made at paper targets tend to make you shoot at awkward angles to your body, thus greatly changing the distance the weapon is away from your eye, making it difficult to get the proper sight picture, whew. I'd get a holosight or a red dot sight. I removed the Leupold scope from my .44 for that very reason, it cost me a good shot at a deer, due to the eye relief problem. Ask the question of others and I think you may get more than 50% of the response in concurrence with my opinion, at least from those that hunt with their guns, and dont just shoot targets.

If you hunt a lot of open or semi-open area a good Leupold may be in order. I like using my 454 in corn fields which means no scope. Trying to pick up a deer in the corn with a scope is tough....

I have a Leupold 2x on one of my FA 454's, it has a 6 inch unported barrel. The scope is a 2x power. It's held up fine, last summer I was doing some load testing and put about 600 rounds thru it using 300 gr. bullets. Make sure you get a good mount, the TSOB mount with three rings is what I'm using. It's never come loose.

Be a real sport and just use the iron sights it came with. I had a Leupold/Gilmore red dot sight on my 480 Ruger, never could get used to it, so I took it off. I can consistanly hit a pepsi can at 100 yards with the iron sights shooting off my knee as support. I have it sighted dead on at 100 with my hunting loads.
