how often should I clean my M1A?

I have been cleaning it every 40 rounds or so...is this correct? I suspect that it might need less cleaning.

I personally clean my gun every time I shoot it, and I'll either clean it to shoot (little lubricant on moving parts or friction points, cleaning action and bore) or to store (heavily oiling, detialing, and using preservative)

I also clean it after a shooting session. I have owned one since 1990 and if it jams today it will be the first time.

You're probably cleaning it too much. It's not really harmful as long as you don't field strip it excessively. If you do, the trigger assembly/stock lockup will eventually become too loose, and you'll have to shim the stock or replace it. And, be sure to always use a bore guide when cleaning the barrel, or the cleaning rod will destroy the accuracy.Neal

As little as possible! The more you clean, and presumably strip, the more you wear things out and change relationships. Assuming you are usung non-corrosive ammo, clean bore (without stripping the rifle) only to remove fouling. Clean action (without stripping, if possible), only to remove powder residue or other dirt to prevent malfunction.Have fun, be careful!Morty

I had a custom built on an Arms core reciever with a Kreiger stainless it was double lugged so I didn't often remove it from the stock I would only remove it at the end of the season after 5,500-7,500 round's the only real gummup occured around the bolt and it is easily removed without stock dissasembly. As for cleaning to much I must confess my laziness. over the course of 5 years I don' think I cleaned it a dozen times the rifle had over 4.5 on the throat gauge and It still shot dimes at 100 yds. when I sold it. I don't think a blued barrel would do as well who knows.
