HOW DOES THE 7MM STW PERFORM?

I wanted to know from anyone who has shot the 7mm stw what they thought of it. Does it group well? Did they shoot it with factory ammo or handload? What range? What style gun was it (sendero, or otherwise)? Any info would be helpful.

Sir, I have shot several STW's over the last few years. The first was a rechambered early 700 ADL. We necked down 8mm Mag brass because factory 7STW was not available. We shot this gun quite a lot off the bench and two things impressed me. I could not tell that it kicked much more than a regular 7 Mag. and it seemed to shot almost everything under 1" at 100 yards. That was for 5 shots. The best groups were with bullets in the 140 gr. range. Since that first gun, I have probably shot 8-10 others in this chambering and have only seen one that would not group under 1" for 3 shots at 100 yards. My two favorites now are a Sako TRG-S and a Winchester M70 Classic Stainless Sporter. Both will shoot 3 shots touching at 100 yards with Winchester Supreme 140 gr. Ballistic Silvertips. Average velocities are 3350 to 3400 fps and they shoot so flat it amazes me. I have not hunted elk with one, but they are very deadly on deer and spectacular on coyotes at long range. If you want a long range deer rifle, I do not think you could do any better.

I have one on a m700 remington ADL with a Douglas heavy barrell. It will put a 5 shot group through the same hole at 100 yds,if you can hold steady enough. Mine gives me 3500 fps muzzle velocity with 86 grains H1000. It shoots so flat it amazes me. It hits like a brick. I shot a very nice muley with 140 grain grand slam bullet and it raised him 3 feet off tdhe ground on impact at about a 80 yard shot. Pretty impressive. the bullet went thru the animal and lodged under the skin on the far side. Enough said. I love it.

The 7mm STW was designed in 1989 by Layne Simpson who is a gun writer for Shooting Times magazine. The 7mm STW design has a slight decrease in body taper compared to teh 8mm Remington Magnum, providing clean rechambering of 7mm Remington Magnum chambers. (In otherwords if you have a 7mm Rem. Mag Rifle you can have it reamed and rechambered for the 7mm STW.) The throat design was given a straight section to improve accuracy potential. This catridge takes advantage of the 3.65" magazine length of the long-action Remington Model 700. The 7mm STW was adopted by SAAMI in 1996. For handloading the slowest powders will probably show best performance. And don't expect your barrel to last to long, especially if you don't let it cool between shots.A-Square Factory Load Data:140gr Nosler SBT 3450fps w/3700lbs160gr Nosler SBT 3250fps w/3750lbs
