Ive decided on the Savage 110 with scope for a good starter rifle. The question is, it comes in .308 and 30/06. They are both large rounds, is their a signifigant difference?

Round to round the 3006 is better. But in my humble opinion I would get the .308. Why? Because the ammo is easier to get, shorter bolt throw and a little less recoil. The 06 has more range but not that much more.

Both are 30 caliber bullets and generally go from 110-180 grain bullets. The 308 will kick less but a good kick-eez pad will deop recoil at least 50-70%. More govt. surplus ammo is available right now for the 308. Most u.s. game can be taken with the 308, but the 30-06 does have better knock down power and range. Yo can shoot a lighter bullet out of the 06 and have good knock down power and less kick.

Good Luck, either round is good for most things.

The 30/06 offers as much as 10% more velocity with 180+ grain bullets. I'm a great fan of the 30/06 but for what you're looking for, I think the 308 is probably a better choice. If you just want to shoot at 100-200 yards, get some of the better quality noncorrosive surplus ammo and blast away. If you shoot on a range, better make sure that the fmj surplus ammo is OK. It sure is hard on backstops and ricochets real bad.

i own the savage 30-06 and am very happy with its proformance. i dont have any recoil reducer on it and it does kick the s*** out of your shoulder(but its a good pain). that kick eez pad is a good idea. have fun.

I've have both! The 06 is the cartridge with the most potenual! But the 08 is the nicest shooting round (low recoil). SO... if your a 5 shot a year guy, then I'd go 06. But if you shoot alot 50 rounds plus a year, then go with the 08! My 2 cents, GOOD LUCK! ...Mark

You have chosen two fine calibers, both of them capaple of taking most North American game. I have been on a few guided hunts, and the topic of enough gun always seems to come up. Most guides as a rule of thumb say a 30-06 is the minimum they recommend to take Elk or other Big game. I like both calibers but if you think you might want to go on a big game hunt I would choose the 30-06. And the 30-06 has a wider range of bullet loads from 110 gr to 220 gr bullets. Hope this helps. Happy hunting!!

The other factor seems to be that 30-06 is almost twice as expensive as .308. Is this allways the case, or just so at the websites I checked? I plan to go through 1,000 + rounds every few months, so, this is a factor.

If the 30-06 is a much better round then I will pay more for it. Thats why I asked.
