Ruger M77 Magnum

I have a couple of questions about the M77 Ruger Magnum action rifles.
I have noticed on some rifles the forward sling swivel is mounted on the barrel while others are mounted with a barrel band but through the forearm. Is this an option? why the variation?
Second; was this rifle ever produced in .404 Jeffrey? I saw an old adverisement that offered this caliber.
Thanks for any info.

The early models had the sling swivel barrel ban under the forearm. Was supposed to be made in 404 but never was.Have owned two of them in 416 Rigby.
