Getting ready to start on a few custom mausers. Does any one know where to look for a good deal on mil spec 98 actions? Thanks!

One of the best deals around right now is still the Turkish M-1938 Mausers which can be had for $39.95 ea. dealer price from J&G Sales and SOG. The prices are starting to go up..I see them for $59.95, but the lesser grade is still $39.95; and if all you want is the action to build on that's the one to get. There are two peculiarities about these. First, they have a flange or recessed area around the front of the receiver ring for retention of the military handguard. This can be easily turned off on a lathe with a carbide bit. Second, some have found that the receiver rings, although large ring size, were threaded to small ring specs. I have not personally encountered this problem. There are still some Czech VZ-24s on the market at about $65--I just received a flyer from Ellett Bros. advertising them. If you miss out on these, then the next opportunity is the lesser grades of Yugo and German 98K-types at about $125 ea.

An ex-gunsmith that works at our shop has been using the Czech vz-24s and reccomends them highly. They are quality large ring actions. He has been buying them retail for 69.95 at Big-5 sporting goods, a large chain sporting goods store here in AZ.
