Problem - follower sticking on 03-A3 conversion

I have this Rem. 03-A3 that has been converted to 300 Win. The follower is sticking at the rear (sometimes forward) when loading in the cartridges. I can get 2 rounds in but placing a 3rd is difficult and the feed on the first is sticking. It's like when the conversion was made, whoever, did not allow for the size difference between the 30-06 and 300 casings. It does shoot well, but I have been basically using it as a single shot. Any suggestions?

I think you have it diagnosed properly. Here are the dimension differences. 30-06 rim-12.01mm, web-11.94mm, shoulder-11.20mm 300win rim-13.51mm web-12.98mm shoulder-12.06mm. I,m not a 'smith, but it seems that a silly millimeter will have to be removed from the mag well. Perhaps a simple fix would be to file a little off the rim of the cartridge, but you still have the problem at the shoulder and maybe extraction problems. Just as a test I would try filing some rounds and do a dry cycle to see if they feed and extract. I would think that a dremel tool could do the mag well, but if you can find a 'smith to do it at a good price, that would be the way to go.

Unless you really know what you're doing, I would advise against a do-it-yourself feed rail job. If you take out too much, the action is ruined. I've done the job and trial and error can get very tedious. Then you try to hurry it along and oops, you have too much out and the rounds won't stay in the mag at all.

Thanks for the replys guys. My Smith polished the follower ends and it feeds great. Low cost on a easy fix.
