Ok, I have heard that these 98's are threaded for small ring barrels. I have also heard that there are some that are threaded for large ring barrels as well. If so, how can you tell without taking the barrel off. Are there any more surprises in store for me when I sporterize one? Help Please!

I think you can see the barrel shank(threaded part) by looking through the back of the action with a good light. There is a noticable difference between a small ring shank and a large ring shank. The C-ring will obstruct most of the butt of the shank but some should be visible on the open side.

the only way to tell if it's a l.r or s.r is to unscrew the barrel the l.r. threads are about 1.100" and the s.r. about .980". i have seen both sizes from the turks (just got 10 rifles for the actions). the actions are a bit rough but will sporterise well.
