I just reciently ordered a m1 garand from the CMP and have been reading a lot of websites about tracing when the rifle was manufactured. Does anyone know if the government kept records as to who the rifle was issued to? I think that it would be interesting to see which rifle man carried the rifle and where. Thanks.

The Army has absolutely no records of which units or individuals were issued any M1 rifles. Numerous people have tried to locate the specific rifle they or a relative used during WWII or Korea, but I have never heard of anyone who was able to do so. In any case, most M1's sold by CMP have been rebuilt, some more than once.

Just enjoy owning and shooting a genuine piece of US military history.
