What to do with my 10/22???

I have a 10/22. It has that Assult look. But it has lost its appeal. I would much rather have a target 10/22. So i'd like to build one. But my dilema then is what to do with mine. I really have no desire to completely strip my 10/22 down to the reciever and build up a costly target rifle on it because it is scratched and dinged. (i dont want to put all new parts on a scratched reciever). If i'm gonna do it i wanna do it right!

Soooooo...here is where you all come in?

First of all....it is a...

~Std. Blue 10/22
~Tasco Silver Antler 3-9x32mm scope
~ruger rings
~ruger scope mount
~Butler Creek Stainless Folder
~quick mag release
~other then the scratches and nick on the receiver it is in excellent shape!
~(btw...i paid $120 for it when i was like 16)

The guy at my sporting goods store told me he could give me between $100 and $120 for it. But that is WITHOUT the folding stock and mag release!!! I would then try and sell the folding stock seperatly and keep the mag release for the target rifle.....

OR should i just try and sell the whole thing for like $200?

I would then put the money from the 10/22, the folder, and another item i just sold toward a new 10/22, a nice scope, hogue stock, and heavy barrel. Am i a fool for doing this????? or should i take the receiver to gunsmith and see if he can fix the damage to the receiver? and then just keep the folder and build off my current receiver? There is some blueing that has rubbed off and there is a small ding next to the shell ejection port.

So whats your opinion???

Thanks
~kaddy

I'm not sure how badly damaged your receiver is, but they are alloy...have the receiver, trigger mechanism, and a stainless bull barrel bead blasted...then leave it the "White" and add a nifty stock. I did this to one of mine and it looks great. Check out some of the following for accessories...

I would suggest you sell the folding stock with the rifle. It is worth more that way. If my understanding of the law is correct, it would be illegal to put a folder on a newer 10/22.

I'd definitely keep the folder on the 10/22. It adds to the value, thanks to Clinton and company. Sell it as a unit. You should be able to get enough to make a good dent on the purchase of a new 10/22 and a new heavy barrel.

The topic of putting a folding stock on a new 10/22 has be descussed time after time. IT IS NOT ILLEGAL TO PUT A FOLDING STOCK ON A NEW 10/22.

Also my advice would be to part everything and sell it seperate to get the most money out of it. Just a general rule of thumb, though there are always exceptions to the rule.

If I'm wrong please correct me, I won't be offended.

leeblackman, wouldn't putting the folder, which has the "conspicous pistol grip," run afoul of the "evil parts" count?

Wouldn't that, according to that BS law, be making it an "assault" weapon?

I do believe leeblackman is correct. The ban the way I read it concerned only centerfire rifles. I saw no mention of rimmedfire rifles being included in the ban.

I had the same configuration on my 10/22, I put it back the way it came from the factory and sold the parts. I got more money for the parts than I paid for them. I think you might have trouble buying another one for $120, and if you are going to add a bunch of improvements, why not try what you already have? It's pretty easy to strip one, inspect it, and rebuild it. I've seen some pretty wild paint jobs on a couple of target models. Your only limited buy your imagination.

Several years ago I faced the same dilemma. I removed the old assault parts and put them in the closet, bought a S.S. .920 Clark barrel with muzzle break, Fajen silhouette stock, Volquartsen trigger/hammer/sear kit ... stripped the black paint from the reciever and built the "new" gun. When I was sure I didn't want the folder and hi-caps any more I sold them and got enough to almost pay for ALL the up-grade parts!

The only bad thing about choosing a Kimber ...
... there are so darn many models to choose from!

What do you all think it would cost to have the receiver and trigger assembly bead blasted?....The cheapest i can get a "stainless" 10/22 would be $199 around here. so if it would cost less then 80 bucks i'll just have it bead blasted and put the folder away for a rainy day.
