228, now discontinued, was a compact version of the full size 226 in 9mm.

229 is dimensionally identical to the 228, but is offered in all three calibers. The 229 in 9mm took the place of the 228.

The 239 is a subcompact, with a single stack mag, shorter grip and shorter slide.

Many internal parts interchange between the various models.

Would 226 mags work in a 228/229? Just wondering...

The 239 and 229 both have slides that are machined out of a solid peice of stainless steel, resulting in probably the most sturdy design possible, also the weight of these slides tame most of the recoil. these guns are definatly top shelf and you can see this just by handling one, be careful, one your hooked on a sig everything else seems so inferior....

Here it goes: 228 9mm only, is STILL in production but availible to military and L.E only. Removeable breech block design similar to early 220, 226 etc. Weight is slightly less than 229.
229: Availible in 9mm, 40s&w, and .357 sig. Fixed breech block, milled into slide. Weight is a little more than 228 due to higher pressure calibers. 9mm mags are interchangeable with 228, as frames are the same.
    239: 9mm 40, .357. Single stack mags and about 1/4 to 1/2 shorter than the 228, 229. Fixed breech block design 9mm 8rd, 40, 357 7rd. Mags for 40 357 are NOT interchangeable.
226 mags will work in the 228 and 229 but not 229, 228 to 226.
