I was given this gun. Im not a collector type. Any info about this gun like when it was made and what the star in the ser# is for?
Its a s&w .38 spcl like the one in the link. It has CTG on the barrel

While cleaning out my father-in-law's personal effects, my wife came across a nickel-plated, ivory-handled, snub nose Smith & Wesson 38 spc ctg. (written on the left side of the barrel) revolver. The serial number is 663375. There's also a V before the hole on the bottom of the grip. We were able to determine that the pistol belonged to my wife's Grandfather who worked for the US Govt. chasing bootleggers. I'd like to know the approx. date and value of the pistol. Any help is appreciated.

star means it went back to the factory for a rework at one time

If you got all your ducks in a row, as far as caliber and serial number are concerned? It's a "Military & Police", 3rd Change dating to the pre World War I years. Probably 1912, give or take a couple of years.

Rufe probably has it but the gun in the ad you link is a Regulation Police .38 S&W, a completely different model and caliber.
