The left side turret is a adjustable objective. Most makers are putting it there instead of the front lens. it is easier to reach while looking through the scope [;)]

I assume this is an older scope and not one by the current Redfield Company. These with 27mm tubes were introduced I believe in 1989. 27mm tubes are larger (stronger) than 1 inch with more adjustment range and very good(long)eye relief. 30mm tubes are larger and better still, but heavier and more expensive. So the 27mm was supposed to be the best compromise.
The 27mm tube idea must not have caught on as I've yet to see a scope with that tube size. I do have a few old Pecars with 26mm tubes though. Your scope is a very nice one and should have come with the proper rings from Redfield. Only problem is if the rings break, or are lost, or if you need a special set-up. I do like the side control for parallex. That's an idea I'm seeing a lot more of and it makes sense and works well.

    thanks twalker!
i thougt it had to be 26mm.the shop insisted that it is 27mm.there are no rings so it would have be shimmed. thanks1
