topic locked

on my thing where you click to start a new topic it says "topic locked" what is that?

I was just wondering why a topic gets locked out to further discussion. I hadn't been able to get on the forums for a couple of months and now I can again and wanted to respond belatedly but found the topic locked. no problem here. still learning
