mounting a rail on TEC-9 iron sight?

I've seen some images on the net of TEC's with rails mounted on the sights and also on the underside of the shroud. I was thinking of adding a laser sight on the top and a flashlight on the underside shroud/barrel extension. I would like to know how much modification to the rail/gun is required. Thanks.

ive put a few rails on tecs. you will have to drill through the upper receiver and tap the holes out. I always left the rear sight on and drilled right through it. just get a picatinny rail of the size you like and drill away. you will have to make sure you get the exact size screws to hold it on, or they will rub on the bolt, or do what I did and run the screws in with locktight and once they are dry, drehmel them flush to the inside of the receiver. there isn't much metal to mount to, so DONT strip the threads.

mounting on the shroud is easy. if your lucky, use the existing holes, if not drill 2 holes where you want the rail, and feed the bolts through.

    Thanks for the Response,
Does this affect the value at all?
I know these are more collectors items than practical firearms.

no, it wont hurt the value. most guys would like the rails on them. I don't understand the fascination with these guns? they are nothing but jam-o-matics. had a cop friend of mine who was on the drug task force tell me he would love it if every gang banger carried a tec 9, as all they do is jam anyways.

Then why bother with a rail?

That way you will know where the bullet MIGHT have gone if it didn't jam? Why not just duct-tape a laser onto a flashlight, thereby cutting out the non-functional and unnecessary "gun" part in the middle? [;)]

On damaging the collectors value, collectors prize guns in original condition and anything you do to reduce that condition detracts from the value.

In this particular case, I think at this time, the collectors value of a Tec-9 is negligible. . .though MAYBE if you live in an anti-gun state that has a gun ban in place, a gun like this might have extra value as a State-permissible "pre-ban" type gun.

Assuming you do a good job mounting the rail, you probably aren't going to lower the guns value (though you probably won't increase it much, either).

Will this gun EVER have collectors value? Hard to say for sure. As they always say, yesterday's junk is today's treasure. So maybe in 100 years someone will think this POS is highly prized, and at THAT point, having extra holes drilled in it will reduce its value.

IMO, if you're after collectors value, you're probably going to be better off selling the TEC-9 and putting the money into something more likely to appreciate (ie anything more than 30 years old with the word "Colt" or "Winchester" on it, etc).
