Well I am ready for the jump from rimfire to center fire after having purchased a Ruger .22 cal semi auto and a Taurus WRM and am doing my "due dilligence" while I wait 30 days for my next delivery. Is 9mm the lowest cost for center fire shooting? If this is the lowest cost what are your thoughts for a low cost semi auto? It is only for target shooting not personal defence. I have been looking at Tokarev, FEG or perhaps Llama or even Makarov. The range folks recommended Ruger but that is what they sell and nearly $400.!!

If range shooting is the objective, lowest cost centerfire might be 38 special target reloads with lead bullets. First class used S&W revolvers are inexpensive and would likely give you more satisfying results on targets at the range than a low price auto. Take a look at a K frame S&W in 38 spl or 357 Mag with target sights. With a loading press you can crank out this ammo for a few pennies per shot.

Well since you said semi-auto and I assume you're more or less a beginner (hey, so am I) and don't want to get into reloading yet. I'd say 9mm is definately the most economical shooter. Wal-Mart has 100 rds for 10.96.-Marcus[This message has been edited by gravedigger (edited 03-02-2002).]

GO to http://www.natchezss.com/ammo.html there 9mm ammo is even cheaper. Sellier & Bellot and CCI Blazer are really cheap. [This message has been edited by Rob3448 (edited 03-02-2002).]

I'll tell you one of my best fun guns. A Taurus 92 copy of the beretta 92. It is relatively cheap to pick up a used one at a gun show, shoots great, feels good to the grip, and uses a double stack magazine.Very accurate also. Mine was more accurate than the beretta, right on the dime. Doesn't have much problems cycling different kinds of ammo, and reloads are pretty inexpensive at gun shows.I got my wife the Taurus to qualify for her carry license and everyone who shoots it really likes it.Eric

Well they weren't lying about the Ruger. The Rugers are some of the best 9mm guns you can buy for the money. The $400 they were talking about is TOO much, unles they throw in a LOT of extras. The Highest you should expect to pay about $340-$350. They are extemely reliable, easy to maintain, and you can buy them in single or double action. I'm not a dealer, but I have one and love it. +4k rounds through and NEVER jammed, bo matter what kind of cheap ammo I feed it. Feel free to email me if you have any ques.-NIK

I shoot a .40S&W pistol. I do lot's of range shooting. The most economical ammo I have found is the Magtech 40B 180gr FMJ. Most other ammos have to much of a "blunt" or "flat" tip on the bullet and do not feed in my gun well. I get these locally (Northern Michigan)for about $9.85 per 50. I have found them cheaper by the case (20 boxes of 50) at www.ivanhoeoutlet.com for about $9.15 per box....$183.00 per case. 9mm is about the same price locally. I feel that the .40 does not have much different recoil than the 9mm, but has quite a bit more punch...........I might add though most 9mm's and .45's have rounder tips which if I could find for my .40 they would feed really well........
