Which of these two choices are good for a 300 yard shot on deer or varmints? Also bolt action or semi auto such as bushmaster 223 or rem 7400 243?

243 is a superior round for deer hunting. 300 yards could be a little out of range in bad conditions like wind. I don't like the 223 for deer period. RG

Forget the .223 at 300 yards. That is a very long shot with a .243 on deer as well. If you are really, really going to make 300 yard shots, consider something larger.

Ditto on HeDog's comments. Go with something bigger if you really think you are going to shoot 300 yds. or more!! 25-06 or bigger would be somewhere to start.

The .243 is a far superior and more versitale cartridge for hunting. However I highly recommend the .257 Roberts for both varmints and deer.

My hunting partner and I have killed many whitetails 300 yards+ with a 243.If you don't hand load, use 95 or 100 grain premium grade factory loads.I have yet to lose a deer with a 223 but all have been shot at less than 100yards.

If you cant decide between the two you could always compromise and get a 6x45mm.Its a wildcat cartride, uses the 6mm bullet from the .243 with the .223rem case.Fires a 75gr HP @ 2900fps with 1400flbsHere are some other great deer killing cartridges you might want to look into..22-250.22-250AI6mm-250.30-284winchester.30-06AI.257roberts.25-06rem.260rem6.5x55swedish.270win7mm mauser7mm-08.308win.30-06spr.303brit8mm mauser
and for those under 50yd shots you might want to look into the .50bmg cartridge....

I used Speer 55 grain (I think they are Game-King or Game-Master).Take only good shots at less than 200 yards and you will be impressed at what a 223 will do to a whitetail.
