Shipping handgun to self

Am going Javalina hunting to Arizona soon. Can I ship my pistol to myself at my brother's address to avoid airline hassels without breaking any laws?

I believe it is legal if your brother does not open the package. The problem may be in getting a carrier to handle the shipment as it will not be going to a ffl. I would put it in my checked baggage. If you do that, be sure and declare it.

You can, but it is very easy to carry it on the airliner. Just call the airlines ahead of time. I've done it several times without a problem. If you get an employee that gives a negative reaction, ask for a supervisor and you'll be OK.

A handgun may only be shipped to the holder of a FFL. You may not ship it to yourself at your brother's residence, no matter who opens the package. There might be a loophole if your brother is a licensed gunsmith who will perform work on your pistol, and then send it back to you after the work is done. I assume you could then use it while at your brother's place while visiting. Of course, if your brother holds a FFL, you could also ship it to him, but he would have to return it to another FFL, with the gunsmith exception noted above. With few exceptions, unlicensed individuals may not ship firearms to unlicensed individuals, even themselves.Just take it on the airplane as suggested.

Prior to 9-11-01 and post 9-11-01 have flown with handguns many times. I am an individual that travels for business, and on various ocassions acquire guns while traveling. Prior to 9-11 it was just a routine matter of announcing you had a gun in your checked baggage, at times you would have to open your luggage so they could verify and properly tag. Post 9-11 give yourself additional because they always have a supervisor not only verify there is a gun in your baggage, but they also check your entire check baggage. It's best to not have any ammunition, even though legally you can carry 50 rounds. The checked luggage you have the gun in must be a hard type case and securely locked.

It is perfectly legal to ship a firearm to yourself in care of your brother. Your brother has to hold it for you and not open the package. This is one of the many exceptions that does not require a firearm to be shipped to an FFL holder. I would, however, just take it with me in my checked baggage.[This message has been edited by EOD Guy (edited 03-03-2002).]

Judge,Either you are mistaken, our I've gotten away with a crime. (not out of the question) We shipped our guns to ourselves care of the hunting lodge in Alaska. We could not carry then via ground due to Canadian law. We then drove up, and retrieved them for the hunt. Then shipped them back home for the return trip. I think I will do some more research. This has been standard practice for the last 8 years, at the advice of our guide.

This is answered in the BATF "Green Book" and at their web site. See FAQ B10 at the link. http://www.atf.treas.gov/firearms/faq/faq2.htm#b10
