Good Bad and Ugly on .223 Rounds...

I've read several posts here about the Russian loads leaving a laquer goop behind when shot. I don't want to put anything bad through my new gun. Which rounds do you use in yours?Any nightmare stories? A great place to buy inexpensive quality ammo?christian

South African.Guatemalan.British.Those are good surplus rds though the Brit chronoes about 150 fps slower.IMI and Win Q3131A are good but IMI is expensive and is M865 spec.Look on the AR15.com board when it is back up-prob tomorrow. We have an ammo Facts and FAQ posted there.cpermd

I tend to use American Eagle and Black Hills .223 ammunition. Never had a problem with them. My buddy has fired some Wolf ammo through is OA and it worked fine once he got a better mag for it. We just ordered 1000rd of Federal (Lake City) ammo from outdoor-source.com. It's supposed to be 2001 production ammo. Seemed like the best balance between price and quality from all the ads I found in Shotgun News and Gun List. Not sure on the total cost after shipping since my buddy ordered it but they advertise just shy of $90 per 500 rds. Granted I haven't gotten it yet but I'm banking on the fact that it's better quality than, say for example, the stuff from Guatemala.GL

Try www.sportsmansguide.com for South African 80's production. 55gr and 3250 fps.If you are a memeber, and buy 2700 rounds, you can get this for less than 12 cents a round. Comes in 300 round battle packs. It is not reloadable, but is good stuff otherwise.

My personal favorite is Black Hills, they make some awesome stuff, but if you want more quantities less money, you may try just about any Nato Spec military surplus, I've seen alot of south african around, but my personal favorite is the British SS109.

I've never had really crappy ammo, but I have had problems with UMC 40 cartriges. Wolf in 7.62 has been decent but had a few that were duds.

I've fired around 500 rounds of the 223 Sellier&Bellot without any trouble at all.Its not that expensive and as for as I'm concerned its very good ammo.I've got 500 rounds of 223 wolf ammo but have not tried it yet.Check out Ammotogo at the Gun Broker auction under rifle ammo, He has sold me quite a bit of ammo and I've had no problems at all.Hope This helps Gerald
