I saw a Redfield 20X Unertl target scope lookalike with a 2" calibrated objective lens housing and external mount adjustments for sale today. I was ready to grab it for $200 until I saw the brand name. Does anyone know something about these scopes and their value?

Can't be sure which model it is from your description, and you mention nothing about condition, which is important in values. My best guess, and it is a guess, it that it is the Model 3200 Target scope (1968-1982). Value is about $350-$450, but deduct $150 if without the mounts.

It doesn't appear in the 1968 Gun Digest and I'm missing the next 20 years of these books. The scope finish is about 90%. It has fine crosshairs and has the mounts but not the threaded end caps or recoil spring and adjustable washer or bases. Does it sound worthwhile at $200 or should I hold out for the Unertl 15X ultra varminter at 2.5x the price?

I am not sure I can answer that. If you want to buy it for an investment to resell later it might be a good deal IF it is the scope I guess. At only 90% condition the collector value will be near the bottom of the range I gave you, but that is still above the price. The next problem would be to find another guy willing to pay more. As we are uncertain that this is the same scope, it is hard to be sure it is really a good buy. As to the Unertl, it depends upon why you want the scope. If you want a period peice for an older rifle, there are certainly less expensive scopes, though the Unertl will hold value and likely evaluate if keept in good condition. If you just want a good scope, certainly there are scopes readily available today that are superior in most respects to either of these older ones.
